Thomas Enoch

Passenger list

Thomas Enoch Powner was born in 1892 to William Powner and Eliza Mountford.

He was christened in Manchester in 1897.

According to the Manchester Schools Admission Registers transcription he was born on 17 April, 1892 and started school in 1896 at the Hague Street School in Manchester.

In 1912 police records tell us a lot more about Thomas Enoch. He had been using different names – Thomas Enoch Palmer and Thomas Power.

His life of crime had started in 1908 when he was accused of stealing five watches then in 1909 he stole cigarettes.

By 1912 he was in court accused of breaking and entering and stealing clothes. He was sentenced to four calendar months in prison and hard labour.

He was described as 5 ft 4 ins in height, a fresh complexion, blue eyes and with a scar over one eye.

On release on 20 March 1913 he gave his address as 180 Husband St., Manchester.

He served in WWI in the 3rd Manchester Regiment and was awarded the Silver War Badge serving from 10.11.1915 to 21.8.1917.

The abbreviations on the award indicate that he did not serve abroad and was discharged as physically unfit for service being permanently discharged.

In 1923, Thomas Enoch boarded a ship, the 'Esperance Bay' sailing on 28 August from London to Melbourne, Australia.

He gave his occupation as carter, his address as 24 St. Michael's Square, Dantzig Street, Manchester.

His brother Luke, also sailed on this ship but stating he intended to go to New Zealand.

I don't know what happened on their arrival in Australia but they both returned on the ship 'Moreton Bay' arriving in London on 22 December 1923.

Maybe Thomas Enoch was refused entry because of his criminal record but at the moment nothing is known about this.

In 1925 there is a marriage for a Thomas E Powner and having found the certificate I know it is correct.

He married Margaret A Fitzgerald and there appear to be no children.

The next appearance of Thomas Enoch that I have found is in the 1932 phone book for the Manchester area where he is listed as a builder at 2 St Michaels Square, Manchester.

Thomas Enoch died in 1974 in Manchester.
